When we were little we would get to walk over to the park to play. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but we got to walk all by ourselves which made us feel very mature. Then we would get to the park, run around like fools, spin each other on the merry-go-round until we were sick...pretty mature huh.
I remember my own kids feeling the same way when they could walk to the park on their own when they were visiting great-grandma.
When I was younger the tower wasn't painted, it was just silver metal with a bright red light (which burnt out this week and needs replaced) on the top. My grandpa told us the light was up on the top of the tower especially for us. If we were ever lost in town all we had to do was find our way to the bright red light, then we could find our way to grandma and grandpa's house. There were a couple of times we had to to that.
When we were coming from Wenatchee to visit the grandparents we used to have a contest to see who could see the "water tower light" first. We would start watching for it a good 20 minutes before we would arrive at the house. I still find myself searching for that light as I am on my way home. There is something about the bright red light that makes me feel like I am close to home. It is nice that something so simple makes such a lasting memory, a simple red light meaning that home is always there.

A grand post - full of happy memories, plus grand shots too.
Great memories. Nice sky watch.
I would like to see your water tower.
What a wonderful story to share with your Skywatch photo. I love water towers and I like the idea of following the light when you needed it.
Thanks everyone. My childhood was like most some good times and some times you want to forget. The one side effect of my heart attack this summer is that the good times and lovely memories are the ones that seem to be the strongest. I decided that life is too short to keep letting the past hurt or bother me anymore.
Mostly though I had a wonderful life growing up, a wonderful family, and so many adventures that I never lack something to think of that makes me smile.
Awwww. I enjoyed reading about your magical water tower and it's 'lighthouse' abilities to help you find your way in the night.
Great photos shots, too.
